Work to improve transport links in Luton town centre is expected to get underway after Local Transport Minister Norman Baker granted final approval for the project.Luton Borough Council will direct the scheme, which will see the construction of a fresh link road to complete the inner ring road, while the traffic circulation on the north side of the town centre is set to be changed.
The full cost of the initiative is £24.1 million, with the Department for Transport providing a maximum of £15.9 million to support the project.
"This important scheme will help to reduce congestion on the town centre road network and help regenerate the town encouraging economic growth and inward investment," the Minister said.
"It will improve public transport facilities and improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists."
Funding approval was initially granted to the scheme in December 2011, and work to implement the proposals is scheduled to be completed in August 2014.
