M77 bus lane study may make public transport more competitive

Date: 4/12/2009
Transport Scotland is studying whether to run a bus lane on the hard shoulder of the M77 motorway between Glasgow and Ayrshire, it was confirmed.
The aim of the study is to determine whether adding the exclusive M77 lane would make bus travel more competitive against private transport.
If approved, park-and-ride sites would be built that could reduce congestion in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow.
A Transport Scotland spokesperson said they were working with stakeholders to determine the feasibility of the plan, which could see bus services running in a pilot project as early as next year.
The project would be the longest bus lane in Scotland at 20 miles in length.
