Major roads in London may be built over, says Govt report

Date: 15/7/2013
Some of London's major roads could become tunnels in the future, as the Mayor's Roads Task Force (RTF) suggests building roofs atop of them over the next 20 years.Arterial roads such as the A12 and parts of the North and South Circular Roads could be affected, with the extra space created used for parks and cycle paths, the report reveals.
The added bonus is that the covered roads may mean some disconnected communities are joined together once again.
Similar projects have been carried out in Paris where three parts of the Peripherique, which is the orbital road around the city, have been built over and turned to green space.
The report proposes funding the move with cash from developers who would use the land for building work.
Among the other suggestions is for a pedestrianised area at Elephant and Castle and more 20mph zones to make roads safer for cyclists and walkers.
