Manchester public transport network 'set for free Wi-Fi in 2015'

Date: 9/7/2013
Passengers on Manchester's public transport network could benefit from Wi-Fi access by 2015, with Metrolink and Metroshuttle services expected to offer free connectivity as part of a £440,000 scheme. The project will also see Wi-Fi rolled out in public buildings such as leisure centres and libraries, and commuters will be able to surf the web during their journeys once the infrastructure is in place.
Councillor Andrew Fender, Chairman of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: "We want to improve the public transport experience for our customers and providing Wi-Fi access is a key part of that.
"This is great news for Metrolink and Metroshuttle passengers, who will be able to make even better use of their travel time by using the internet for free."
Council bosses are reportedly attempting to secure greater funding for the initiative from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport with a view to increasing the scope of broadband services in the city.
