Many drivers 'adopting telematics-based insurance'

Date: 19/4/2012

A new study has revealed many drivers expect to switch to a telematics-based car insurance policy over the next few years.

Conducted by Gocompare.com, the research found 57 per cent of motorists are likely to make the switch before 2017.

The majority of road users think their cover should be based on the way they drive instead of their age and gender, while 97 per cent of respondents claimed careful drivers should be rewarded with a cheaper policy.

Head of Car Insurance at Gocompare.com Scott Kelly said: "Over the last few years we've seen car insurance premiums reach record highs."

However, he pointed out that when a ruling from the European Court of Justice comes into effect, insurers will no longer be able to use gender as a factor when calculating rates.

Cobra UK Managing Director Andrew Smith explained telematics encourage safer driving - as well as having the potential to lower insurance premiums - as they detail fuel consumption, average and top speed, cornering, braking and the distance travelled
