Many drivers 'unaware of UK speed limits'

Date: 29/3/2012
Many British drivers could be putting their safety at risk because they do not know the legal speed limits, it has been revealed.Research conducted by LV= discovered 71 per cent of drivers cannot name the limit on specific types of road, such as rural routes, dual carriageways or residential locations.
While the limit is 70mph for cars and motorcycles on motorways and dual carriageways, this dips to 60mph on single carriageways and 30mph in built-up areas.
Furthermore, nine per cent of motorists have been caught speeding over the past three years, while 17 per cent of these are repeat offenders, having been caught two or three times.
The majority of people were 8.5mph over the limit, but this increased to 20 per cent among four per cent of individuals.
Managing Director of LV= Car Insurance John O'Roarke said the results of the survey are "alarming".
"The police data shows that more speeding motorists are being caught each year and drivers should take care to know their limits to avoid a fine, penalty points or worse," he added.
