Many near misses 'caused by drivers who don't look properly'

Date: 16/4/2012
Over half of motorists have been cut up by another road user who was not looking properly over the past six months. This is according to new research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which found this has been experienced by 58 per cent of drivers.
A total of 40 per cent of these incidents took place in areas with a 30mph speed limit, while 52 per cent of respondents admitted to having a near miss with a motorcyclist.
In 29 per cent of collisions, failure to look contributes to the situation, while the figure is 36 per cent for slight accidents.
Chief Executive of the IAM Simon Best said: "It's always someone else's fault. All road users need to be more aware of who they are sharing the road with and the risks they present."
The government recently launched a new £1.2 million motorcycle safety campaign called Named Drivers that aims to make people more aware of these road users.
