Mayor announces funding for outer London cycling

Date: 18/2/2011
Mayor Boris Johnson and Transport for London (TfL) have unveiled plans to make funding available for the purpose of creating cycling hubs in the outskirts of the capital. It claims that 2.4 million journeys are made everyday in outer London that could be done on two wheels and it hopes the finance will allow boroughs to improve cycling infrastructure and encourage more locals to get on their bike.
The Biking Boroughs programme will consist of £4 million, with each of the 13 areas to have been awarded the status set to receive £25,000.
Mr Johnson said: "This funding will enable our friends in outer London to develop exciting ways to make cycling bloom in their boroughs making it easier to replace some short car journeys with pedal power."
TfL earlier reported that the success of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme in the capital during its first six months has seen participants collectively peddling 10,000,000 km.
