Date: 21/10/2010
The protection of funding for London transport services in the government's Comprehensive Spending Review has been welcomed by mayor Boris Johnson.Capital has been secured for the building of Crossrail, upgrade works on the London Underground and maintenance of the city's bus network.
Mr Johnson said he is pleased the government has "recognised the immense importance of protecting investment in the capital."
Without funding for the city's buses, underground or Crossrail, the UK's economic recovery would have been put at risk, he continued.
Peter Hendy, London's Transport Commissioner, added there are tough challenges ahead and Transport for London (TfL) needs to continue to deliver the travel improvements Londoners require while delivering services that give commuters and taxpayers good value for money.
Last month, Ian Brown - Managing Director of TfL's London Rail - stated train passengers will experience immediate benefits from the London Overground's newly-completed electric train fleet.
