Date: 7/2/2013
The European Parliament's Transport and Tourism committee has voted to include cycling in the (TEN-T) Trans-European Transport Network guidelines for the first time.MEPs have been targeted by the (ECF) European Cyclists' Federation over the past year, with the organisation calling for greater emphasis to be placed on the needs of cyclists when EU bodies devise transport policy and infrastructure initiatives.
"This vote represents a significant change in attitude and a first step in the right direction," said Bernhard Ensink, Secretary General of ECF.
"The European Parliament Transport and Tourism Committee have shown that they can improve cycling conditions across the continent by giving cycling the investment it deserves."
The decision means that the impact transport projects could have on cycling is set to play a bigger role in determining the direction of EU policy in the future, with spending on bike bridges, tunnels and long distance paths highlighted as potential areas for investment.
