Middle East representatives gather to discuss public transport plans

Date: 7/2/2013
Representatives of public transportation authorities and companies from across the Middle East gathered at Sohar University on Tuesday to discuss the potential direction of future policy in their respective countries. As the Times of Oman reports, speakers from Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Lebanon gave speeches on areas such as buses and trains as the region looks to improve its public transport systems.
Dr Rashid Al Safi Al Huraibi, Chairman of the Tender Board of Oman, said: "I feel this event is very important because it's starting the roadmap for our public transport.
"I think once good public transit is made available, with good quality and observance of schedules and meeting the requirements of the users, there will be a lot of users."
With Dubai and Abu Dhabi highlighted as great examples of the ways in which vast improvements in public transit can be made in the Middle East, it seems there is a genuine appetite to modernise the region's transport networks.
