Minister states support for quiet night-time deliveries

Date: 11/3/2010

Transport minister Paul Clark has stated his support for quiet night-time deliveries, it has been reported.

The minister told the Freight Transport Association's Urban Logisitics Conference that such deliveries help to tackle urban congestion, reduce carbon emissions and encourage more reliable deliveries.

He added that quiet night-time deliveries do not impact on the lives of residents.

Mr Clark noted: "With the adoption of best practice in quiet delivery technology and techniques, a balance can be found between protecting residents and relaxing curfews for a range of locations and store types."

The Freight Transport Association's head of policy for London Natalie Chapman voiced her agreement with the minister, stating that such deliveries offer significant benefits.

She added that creating a "best practice framework" could eliminate the perceived drawbacks of deliveries during off-peak hours.

Meanwhile, the government has announced hauliers are to be taught how to drive in a more fuel-efficient way as part of a new scheme.
