More evening trams set to run in London

Date: 26/5/2011

Additional trams are set to run through London in the evenings on the Wimbledon to New Addington route.

From the end of the month (May 31st), the London Tramlink will increase the length of its eight trams per hour service to 21:00 BST from its current cut off of 19:00 BST.

After this time, four vehicles will operate every 60 minutes.

Transport for London (TfL) is currently considering adding more new trams to the network in order to offer a service between Therapia Lane and Elmers End by next year.

Director of Tramlink at TfL Phil Hewitt said he hoped passengers would benefit from the plans as travelling in this way is deemed as "appealing and convenient".

Meanwhile, Mayor of the city Boris Johnson noted: "Our trams are a highly-popular way of getting around south London and stepping up the evening services will make it much easier for anyone going home from work or heading for a night out in that bustling part of the capital to do so."

It was announced in March that City of Edinburgh/CAF, Pesa and Stadler are the bidders that have been shortlisted to supply new trams for the link.
