More green buses to be made available

Date: 6/7/2010
More than 150 green buses will join fleets across the country thanks to £15 million worth of funding from the government.Councils and bus operators across England will get the chance to bid for the money, which will be available to put towards the cost of purchasing low-carbon versions of the mode of transport.
Low-carbon carriers currently account for just 0.2 per cent of buses on the road, despite using at least 30 per cent less fuel and emitting almost a third less carbon than their traditional counterparts.
"It will deliver significant benefits, in particular reducing the impact of road transport on climate change and improving air quality," remarked Transport Minister Norman Baker.
He added it will make transport systems greener and more sustainable.
Last week, Mr Baker announced an extra £40,000 of funding will be used to help support and create more car clubs, through which customers can hire low-carbon automobiles.
