More than half of motorway drivers admit to tailgating

Date: 1/3/2012

A significant number of drivers are compromising their safety by driving too close to the vehicle in front when on the motorway.

Data from Brake has revealed 53 per cent of motorists tailgate, which puts them at risk of causing a pile-up.

This figure is higher than the total of 49 per cent recorded seven years ago.

Furthermore, men are more at fault than women, as 30 per cent of males admitted to tailgating on a weekly basis.

Deputy Chief Executive at Brake Julie Townsend said her organisation is against the government's plans to raise the speed limit on motorways.

"We urge all drivers to realise the vital importance of the two second rule and make a personal commitment to always stick to it," she added.

Brake recently welcomed plans that will see MOT test standards raised to ensure any potentially dangerous problems with cars are always discovered during the checks.
