Motor industry prepares for electric vehicles

Date: 12/10/2010
The car industry is developing new qualifications and training schemes in preparation for the expected increase in the number of electric vehicles on the roads.A sector-wide electric vehicle qualification is currently being developed by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and its partners, the Institute of the Motor Industry and Semta.
This will form the basis of new training guidelines, which it is hoped will guarantee an understanding of electric cars throughout manufacturing, the aftermarket, the emergency services and breakdown recovery operations.
Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the SMMT, described hybrid vehicles as "exciting new technologies" that will grow in popularity.
He said it is vital workers in the motor industry are "properly prepared" for the growing numbers of electric cars expected to hit the roads and the programme "will ensure consumers get the very best support and that this new technology has a smooth introduction to the marketplace".
However, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes UK Wilfried Steffen recently told What Car? Britain's electric vehicle strategy is lagging behind that of its European counterparts.
