Motorcycle road safety campaign launched in London

Date: 6/10/2010

A new road safety campaign that aims to improve drivers' awareness of motorcyclists has been launched by Transport for London (TfL).

The project is part of an initiative to reduce the number of collisions in the capital involving bikers, following a trial that began in July to allow them to use bus lanes.

Through radio advertising, the campaign urges road users to look out for motorcyclists, especially when turning across the lanes.

Kulveer Ranger, the London mayor's Transport Advisor, said the trial has "showed some real successes", but has caused a rise in accidents involving cars turning in or out of side roads where bus lanes are present.

"I want all road users to respect each other so they can share the roads and help everyone to stay safe as they make their way around London," he remarked.

Moped riders have also been asked to take extra care on the roads recently, as the Institute of Advanced Motorists revealed the number of casualties involving teenage users of the vehicles is highest in autumn.
