Motorcyclists 'face greater risk than other road users'

Date: 11/7/2011
Summer is traditionally a time when motorcyclists take to the roads in the UK and one safety group is warning them to be careful when they do so.The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) says that the biggest threat to bikers is car drivers failing to look properly and pay attention.
As a result, it notes that it is important those in a four-wheel vehicle keep a keen eye out, while also leaving plenty of space around the motorbike if they are in front or behind one.
This is because the rider may be swerving to try and avoid road surface obstructions such as potholes that would not trouble a larger motor, so it is important they have the necessary space in which to do this.
The IAM also issues advice for motorcyclists, saying they should position themselves on the road at the same point as where a car driver would be sitting in order to make themselves more visible.
Chief Examiner at the Institute Peter Rodger says: "Motorcycling is a fun and convenient way of travelling, so it is important riders appreciate how to protect themselves and car drivers learn to take a bit more care when looking out for them."
The Driving Standards Agency recently highlighted the importance of dressing suitably to ride a motorbike or scooter and noted that any riders attending their module one or module two tests while not wearing the correct attire could be turned away.
