Motorists given advice for winter weather

Date: 25/11/2010
As a cold snap hits the UK, motorists have been given advice on how to stay safe during severe weather conditions.Insurance provider More Than recommended carrying de-icer in the car in case locks freeze, as well as a warm coat or blanket for keeping warm during potential breakdowns.
Vehicles that are not used very often should have their engines regularly turned over to ensure batteries stay energised, while people should not leave their cars unattended with the keys in the ignition while warming them up, as many are stolen in this way by opportunistic thieves each year.
Furthermore, the company suggested checking tyre, battery and wiper blade conditions before setting off, as well as keeping items such as a torch, ice scraper and shovel in the car.
The Met Office has issued a number of severe weather warnings today (November 25th), cautioning there will be widespread icy roads in areas such as south-west Scotland and Northern Ireland.
