Motorists 'should pay attention to vehicle maintenance'

Motorists 'should pay attention to vehicle maintenance'

Date: 9/8/2010

People should pay full attention to basic car maintenance during the summer, it has been suggested.

Motor Codes has revealed its tips for avoiding common problems such as overheated engines, under-inflated tyres and broken air-conditioning.

"Hot weather, heavy loads and long trips can place a significant strain on our vehicles, but the good news is there are a number of small measures we can take to ensure a happy holiday," said Chris Mason, Director of Motor Codes.

The company advises drivers should check their car's oil and coolant levels, examine their tyre pressures and take their vehicle for a check up at a garage before they go on holiday.

Motorists driving abroad should also make sure they are fully insured to do so and research the road rules for the country they are travelling to.

Recent research by Kia Motors revealed that only 52 per cent of British drivers say they understand all road signs.

And while 83 per cent of motorists classify themselves as good road users, a third do not know the national speed limit for a standard car is 60mph for a single carriageway and 70mph for dual carriageways and motorways.
