Motorists urged to check the small print of insurance policies

Date: 19/7/2010
Motorists should check the small print in their insurance policies to verify whether an MOT is necessary if they want to fulfil a claim, one expert has suggested.Insurance Development Manager at Swinton Steve Chelton said every contract enforces a duty of care on the policyholder that requires vehicles to be maintained properly and MOT certificates to be kept up to date.
He noted recent news the government may introduce a system whereby cars are checked every two years rather than once every 12 months could concern some of the 33 million drivers on the UK's roads.
"We urge all motorists to perform regular checks on their vehicles, including tyre pressures checks and oil and water level checks to ensure that they remain in a roadworthy condition between MOT tests," Mr Chelton added.
An online MOT reminder service was recently launched by Motor Codes in a bid to make sure motorists do not forget when their vehicle is due its annual examination.
