Motorists urged to look after their car keys

Date: 8/7/2010

Motorists are being warned to ensure they look after their car keys, even when they are at home.

Police Liaison Manager for Tracker Adrian Davenport issued the plea following a burglary at a house in Surrey in which two vehicles were stolen.

"Don't leave [keys] on display, such as in a bowl or hook by the door, as this makes it too tempting for thieves to break in and drive off into the sunset with your car," he added.

One of the vehicles taken was fitted with a tracking device, which led police to where it was being stored.

When officers arrived at the site in Buckinghamshire they also discovered three other stolen automobiles.

The vehicles were then recovered by police and two suspects were also arrested.

According to the AA, it is virtually impossible to steal a modern car without getting hold of the keys first.

And the organisation noted the Home Office revealed seven per cent of household burglaries in 2008-09 involved taking automobiles using keys stolen from inside the property.
