Motorists urged to prepare cars for winter

Date: 23/11/2010
With snowfall forecast to hit the UK over the next few days, the Institute of Advanced Motorists is urging drivers to prepare their cars for winter.Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner at the organisation, said: "Bad weather can strike quickly and more severely than you expect, so now is the time to give your car a health check before winter conditions take their toll."
He advised Britons to ensure their windscreen wipers are in good condition, as well as top up their washer fluid with a suitable anti-freeze solution and invest in a new ice scraper and cans of de-icer if necessary.
Meanwhile, tyres should be checked thoroughly to make sure they have the correct tread depth and all lights need to be tested.
Roads Minister Mike Penning also warned people to be prepared for severe weather conditions on the roads recently, advising them to put an emergency kit in their cars and monitor forecasts before embarking on journeys.
