Motorists urged to tackle roadside litter

Date: 18/8/2010
Drivers have been called to help reduce road-side litter by acting on the Highways Agency's Bag It! Bin It! campaign.
The message encourages motorists to keep a rubbish bag in their cars and dispose of it in a bin when they have the opportunity.
Derek Turner, Network Director at the Highways Agency, said while the organisation and local authorities will continue to clear waste from the roads, it would be more efficient to bin the rubbish initially.
"Litter is not only unsightly, but we spend public money on clearing it, which could be far better used on keeping our roads safe and in good condition," he remarked.
Each year, the agency estimates it clears the equivalent of some 700,000 sacks of litter from motorways and other strategic roads in England.
The body is an executive agency of the Department for Transport and is responsible for the maintenance and improvements of England's road network.
