Motorists warned of possible fuel shortages

Date: 6/12/2010
Some garages in Britain could suffer shortages as the winter freeze causes problems with petrol and diesel supplies. The RMI Independent Petrol Retailers Association has reported some of its members have suffered shortages at pumps, in particular those in rural locations or not adjacent to major roads.
However, it is recommended drivers do not panic buy fuel, as this could lead to further problems, with the severe spell of weather already estimated to be costing businesses billions of pounds a day.
Disruption to the UK's transport networks looks set to continue, as temperatures plummet again and further snowfalls are forecast for central Scotland and Northern Ireland.
This could lead to shortages at the pumps if supply chains are affected and Confused.com has urged drivers to check their tanks are topped up before setting off on journeys.
According to the organisation, it is also important to have effective breakdown cover in place, as failure to do so could lead to long chilly waits and high costs for roadside recovery and repair.
