Motorway truckstop facilities 'to be considered'

Motorway truckstop facilities 'to be considered'

Date: 24/6/2011

Following the closure of the roadside facilities policy consultation last year (July 2nd 2010), a minister has revealed that proposals will again be considered for dedicated motorway truckstops.

Mike Penning, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, said he is introducing an alteration to the policy that will allow the development of such amenities on this type of road.

Until now, rest stops that can be accessed directly from motorways have not been permitted, but the MP noted that where there is evidence that lorry parking demand outstrips supply the development of such a space at existing service areas would be viewed favourably.

However, he added that any truckstops that would potentially prevent future service stations from being built would be unlikely to secure approval.

Commenting on the news, the Road Haulage Association welcomed Mr Penning's announcement.

Infrastructure Manager at the group Chrys Rampley said: "His decision to allow full-service truckstops on motorways will attract the investment we need for a step-change in the availability of lorry parking on major routes."

He added that the policy would also allow such vehicle operators to enjoy more comfort and security on their journeys.
