MP wins award for Winchester pedestrian safety campaign

Date: 15/7/2013

Steve Brine, the MP for Winchester and Chandler's Ford, has been handed the Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month award thanks to his work to improve pedestrian safety in his borough.

The prize, which is awarded by road safety charity Brake and Direct Line Group, is thanks to his campaigning for pedestrian crossings.

With help from children at Osborne School in Winchester, he went to the House of Commons in March 2012 to lobby for a crossing outside the school on Andover Road, which is a busy route in and out of Winchester.

He also wrote to Hampshire County Council asking for a safe place to cross and after working with local councillors, the announcement was made earlier this year that a crossing would be built. In February 2013 work began and it was completed in April.

This is not the first time he has campaigned for pedestrian crossings, having previously had one built on the junction of St Cross Road and Stanmore Lane. Furthermore, he has also begun a campaign for a third crossing on Worthy Road.

"As a keen cyclist and parent of two little ones I am constantly aware of the importance of road safety and am delighted that my work in this area has been recognised by Brake," said Mr Brine.

"The staff and pupils from Osborne School have been absolutely brilliant in their campaign to get this crossing. It's been a long time coming, but it's a huge relief to us all to see this safe crossing now installed. I will continue to work hard for road safety in my constituency and beyond."

Julie Townsend, Brake's Deputy Chief Executive, explained how he has a "strong" commitment to road safety, particularly for pedestrians. He listens to the needs of the local community and acts effectively to ensure these concerns are answered.

"His successes show what can be achieved by communities working together and taking action to prevent devastating casualties before they happen," she added.
