Namibia launches annual road safety campaign

An annual road safety campaign has once again been launched in Namibia.

The Xupifa Eemenyo Save Lives Road Safety Campaign, which was first introduced in 2006, aims to prevent accidents on the country's roads, particularly over the busy Christmas period, New Era reports.

An emergency response number has been set up to ensure those who are injured as a result of an incident on the highways receive prompt medical assistance.

There will also be increased police visibility through the introduction of more road blocks and random vehicle inspections to assess drivers for alcohol consumption and roadworthiness.

Furthermore, volunteers will be working up and down the country to educate Namibians about the importance of road safety and distribute associated literature.

The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund Namibia is urging motorists to "to drive safely and comply with traffic laws and to refrain from drinking whilst driving and over speeding," the news provider added.

This comes just after a committee was established in Nigeria in a bid to prevent the build-up of traffic while new year celebrations take place in the country.
