Network Rail begins replacement of Cow Lane bridges in Reading

Date: 5/12/2011

Network Rail is replacing two bridges near Cow Lane in Reading in a bid to ease congestion in the area.

Work will take place on the first structure during December and January and once complete, it will accommodate two lanes of traffic, a pavement and a cycle path.

The bridges are currently very narrow and cause problems for both motorists and train passengers.

Construction is being carried out at a nearby site and the new arch will then be lifted into place. Work on the second bridge will be finished in 2015.

Network Rail's Project Director Bill Henry said: "Not only will it pave the way for an improved railway in Reading, but also help solve the traffic problems that plague Cow Lane."

The organisation also hopes to reduce congestion at East Croydon train station by removing a now unused Royal Mail conveyor belt and installing a new footbridge.

Work will begin on Christmas Day in an attempt to keep disruption to a minimum.
