Network Rail calls for legislation to tackle cable theft

Date: 28/12/2011
Network Rail is calling for the introduction of new legislation in a bid to reduce cable theft on Britain's train lines. The organisation explained this is currently a big problem affecting businesses and communities, as well as passengers.
It believes changing the law in an attempt to reduce the amount of illegal trade within the scrap industry is the best way to prevent theft of metal.
"We recognise there are many entirely legitimate metal recycling businesses, but firmly believe the current legislation in this area is outdated," Network Rail continued.
It added it receives a great deal of public money for the maintenance of the UK's railways, meaning taxpayers lose out if more cash has to be spent on repair works due to cable theft.
The group recently revealed it has adopted an information programme called ORBIS, which will enable it to save money by changing the way it collects and utilises information about the country's rail infrastructure.
