Network Rail chooses ETCS Level 2 for re-signalling

Date: 2/4/2012

Network Rail has selected European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 as a recommended method of re-signalling Britain's railways.

Beginning this month, new framework agreements will cover a one-year development phase in which a signalling system will be demonstrated at a testing facility on the Hertford loop.

The organisation stated it is using technology that delivers the lowest possible whole-life asset costs and ETCS Level 2 was selected because it is cheaper to install than conventional signalling.

It is also part of the European Rail Traffic Management System, which enhances safety while improving performance and reducing railway maintenance costs.

Director of Future Trains and Operation Control Systems at Network Rail Andrew Simmons said: "ETCS is now a crucial part of our plans for re-signalling the railway - our focus now is on building confidence and experience in the technology."

Last month, the organisation explained the British train network needs to be environmentally sustainable, as well as promote economic growth.
