Network Rail dedicates £15m to station improvements

Date: 31/5/2012
Network Rail is delivering £15 million worth of upgrades to the UK's train stations. In 2011, the organisation launched a £100 million station improvement fund alongside the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Association of Train Operating Companies.
These latest changes come from the final group of successful bids and will include new and extended car parks, new retail space and station redevelopments.
Rail Minister Norman Baker said the initiative is "great news" for passengers as it will help ensure travelling by train is a positive experience.
"If we are to encourage more people to travel by rail in the future then stations must be easier to get to and have better facilities," he added.
To benefit from the funding, proposals had to demonstrate they would benefit customers, as well as generate a financial return for the DfT.
Birmingham New Street station is currently undergoing improvement works as a brand new entrance is being built, which will be opened in 2013.
