Network Rail 'to save £50m a year' using ORBIS

Date: 23/12/2011
Network Rail is utilising new technology it hopes will enable it to save a significant amount of money over the next few years. The organisation has adopted the information programme ORBIS, which it is believed will enable it to save more than £50 million a year by 2019.
Using the technology, Network Rail will be able to improve the way it collects and stores information about the UK's rail infrastructure, as well as change how it analyses this data.
ORBIS is an eight-year project and it will be used by those who work around the clock on the front line to ensure the British train network runs smoothly.
The group stated it will benefit from "especially robust smartphones and tablets which we are issuing to our maintenance teams in order to help them access a range of data quickly whilst out on site."
It recently announced it has received a great deal of support from the public over plans to improve rail links across the north of England.
