New Cycle Superhighways open in London

Date: 21/7/2011
Two new Cycle Superhighways have opened in the UK capital, as the Mayor's plans to encourage more people to walk or cycle continue apace.Transport for London (TfL) reports that the Barclays-sponsored project has launched two new routes for cyclists, running from Bow to Aldgate and from Wandsworth to Westminster respectively.
On the latter, there are dedicated paths on Grosvenor Road and Millbank, while the Wandsworth Bridge roundabout has had an off-road option constructed for people on two wheels.
Since the first of the Superhighways were introduced as part of a pilot project, cycling has increased 46 per cent between Merton and City, while it has risen by 83 per cent between Barking and Tower Gateway.
Meanwhile, 80 per cent of users revealed they felt their safety was improved when they were using the blue paths.
Ben Plowden, TfL Director of Better Routes and Places, says: "Our pilot route research indicates that more and more people are using the routes to cycle to and from work, which goes to show that Londoners are recognising that cycling is not only good for your health and fitness, but it is also extremely good for your wallet."
It is hoped more people in the capital will take to two wheels to get around, with Mayor Boris Johnson's Great Outdoors Programme aimed at improving public spaces, paths and passages by upgrading lighting and footpaths and planting more greenery.
