New Forth bridge to be called the Queensferry Crossing

Date: 26/6/2013
The new bridge being constructed across the Firth of Forth will be called the Queensferry Crossing after the name secured 35.5 per cent of votes over the course of a six-week public ballot.First Minister Alex Salmond described the project as a "bridge to the future" when he announced the name earlier today (June 26th), with Queensferry Crossing narrowly chosen ahead of Caledonia Bridge - a proposal which received 31.2 per cent of the 37,648 votes cast.
"The Forth replacement crossing is the country's biggest and most significant transport infrastructure project for decades and I'm delighted that the naming process has enabled so many thousands of people to get involved and rightly feel a sense of ownership," Mr Salmond said.
Among the various reasons for constructing a new crossing at the Firth of Forth were the signs of corrosion that were detected in the suspension cables holding up the current Forth Road Bridge.
Indeed, although the process has reportedly been halted by pumping dry air into the structure, it was decided that a fresh bridge was required in order to support transport networks in the region.
