New hybrid London bus undergoes testing

Date: 31/5/2011
The prototype for a new hybrid bus is the subject of testing in what is hoped will lead to a roll out of the vehicles across the centre of the UK's capital.According to Transport for London, the vehicle - which features a lightweight electric motor - has been submitted to Millbrook Proving Ground for examination.
Using hybrid technology, it is hoped the carrier will reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 40 per cent when compared to a conventional diesel-powered bus, while particulate matter will be cut by 33 per cent.
Should every similar public transport motor in the capital perform to this level, then overall NOx could be cut by 57 per cent, helping to boost overall air quality.
Meanwhile, fuel consumption and general performance could also enjoy improvements, the group notes.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson says: "I am thrilled that we are now able to put this lean, green and thoroughly ravishing machine through its paces. Over the next few months its mettle will be well and truly tested."
On Friday (May 27th), Mr Johnson switched on the first city-wide network of electric charge points for the owners of vehicles powered in this way to make use of.
