New initiative designed to improve motorcyclists' defensive riding skills

Date: 19/4/2013

The THINK! campaign has launched a new road safety initiative with a view to improve the defensive riding skills of motorcyclists.

Dubbed 'Stay in Control', the scheme was developed in collaboration with partners from the motorcycle industry, and will see various promotional materials distributed in a bid to enhance safety.

Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond explained that incidents involving motorcyclists make up a disproportionate amount of accidents in the UK, and that the new campaign will help motorcyclists improve their awareness on the roads.

"This latest campaign urges bikers to ride defensively - this includes taking a 'lifesaver glance' around before manoeuvring and giving yourself time to react to potential hazards," he said.

"Any message that has the potential to reduce the number of tragedies on our roads involving motorcyclists and save lives is worth hammering home."

The Motorcycle Industry Association and Yamaha are among those involved with the scheme, while other organisations capable of promoting the initiative are being encouraged to do so.
