New Lancashire transport body handed £35m transport fund

Date: 8/3/2013
A new (LTB) Local Transport Body formed in Lancashire is set to receive £35 million worth of funding over a four year period. As the Lancashire Evening Post reports, representatives from Lancashire County Council, Blackpool Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council combined to form Transport for Lancashire, which will help to distribute the money to various road and railway projects throughout the county.
Councillor Tim Ashton, Lancashire County Council's Highways and Transport Chief, explained that the new LTB has the potential to play a major role in stimulating economic growth in the region.
"We'll be looking to link people from where they live to where they work, getting resources to factories and moving materials around the county," he said.
Starting from 2015/16, the Department for Transport will supply the funding to Lancashire as the county's authorities look to improve road and rail networks to support residents and businesses.
Despite the £35 million grant, Mr Ashton added that he plans to lobby Ministers in an attempt to secure greater transport funding in the future.
