New London buses expected to deliver 'millions in savings'

New London buses expected to deliver 'millions in savings'

Date: 8/5/2013

A fresh procurement process and the acquisition of 600 new buses is set to save (TfL) Transport for London millions of pounds in the coming years, with a fixed-price deal being secured with Wrightbus.

As part of efforts to cut costs and improve efficiency, the initiative is designed to combat the risk of future increases in production prices and inflation.

Under the terms of the contract, the vehicles will operate in the capital throughout their entire working life, while it is said they will be the greenest diesel electric hybrid buses in the world.

The new fleet is expected to reduce CO2 emissions in London by almost 20,000 tonnes a year, and a fresh design will mean that three doors and two staircases will be included on board.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: 'We will ensure these buses more than earn their keep over the next few years.

"By keeping them in harness in the capital for the entirety of their useful life, we will be extracting every last drop of value out of them."
