New mirrors to improve safety for London cyclists

Date: 7/7/2010

New mirrors are being installed at junctions in London in a bid to improve road safety for cyclists.

The Trixi mirror is designed to give drivers of large vehicles better visibility and reduce the number of people on bicycles injured by collisions.

A total of 37 are set to be fitted this month and Mayor Boris Johnson explained he and Transport for London are aiming to ensure various road users have the tools needed to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, a poster campaign is highlighting to cyclists the dangers that come with riding on the left-hand side of lorries at junctions, warning that attempts to undertake can lead to potentially fatal injuries.

"Safety is the top priority of the cycle revolution that we're bringing to London," said Mr Johnson.

The Mayor's Barclays Cycle Hire scheme gets underway on July 30th, with 6,000 bikes to be made available at around 400 locations across the capital.
