New motorway messages to combat tyre incidents

Date: 1/8/2013
The number of tyre-related incidents on the motorway has encouraged the (HA) Highways Agency to use overhead message boards on the UK road network to promote the importance of tyre safety. The organisation revealed that there were 2,500 breakdowns caused by poorly-maintained tyres in May and June alone, which makes it a priority, as they can have a significant impact on lane closures, delays and collisions.
‘Safe tyres save lives’ will be displayed on overhead motorway gantries to remind motorists of the need to check their tyres before a journey, monitoring tread depth and pressures.
Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe, said these incidents cause a host of problems for drivers, passengers and other road users, making regular tyre checks crucial.
"The new message signs are a great reminder to drivers about the four small pieces of rubber that are responsible for them being able to brake or corner and arrive at their destination safely," he added.
