New organisation pushes for electrification of surface transport

Date: 20/3/2013
The Platform for the Electrification of Surface Transport held its inaugural meeting in Brussels yesterday (March 19th), with a range of organisations and groups coming together to highlight the benefits electric transport technologies could have in Europe.Calling for public authorities to support the widespread electrification of surface transport, the Platform believes that such a programme could serve as an effective way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the European Union's dependence on imported oil.
Speaking about the scheme's aims, MEP Gesine Meissner explained that electrified transport solutions would also bring a substantial economic boost to Europe.
"The vision of the Platform is to aim for fully electrified door-to-door multimodal transport solutions," she said.
"This is an exciting prospect for European citizens and businesses, with significant growth and employment prospects."
A total of 11 organisations have combined to establish the Platform, including Nissan, Polis, Going Electric and Alstom.
