New rail operating centre coming to York

Date: 23/2/2012
Network Rail is planning to build a new rail operating centre in York.It is part of wider plans to construct 14 such sites up and down the UK, which will provide frontline maintenance training and teach existing staff members new skills.
The purpose-built facility in York will bring together training centres along the east coast.
It will also control rail operations along this route, running from King's Cross in London to the Scottish borders.
Network Rail's Route Managing Director for London North Eastern Phil Verster said the plans will help to ensure the UK has a "modern, efficient railway".
"They will allow us to retain jobs in [York] as well as bringing future employment benefits which are vital for economic growth and prosperity," he added.
Over Christmas, the organisation introduced new track and signalling systems around the city's station in a bid to ease congestion for services using the east coast main line.
