New road to Mecca opens

Date: 5/8/2013
Part of the new road between Briman and Mecca, which stretches between Briman Bridge to the Mecca-Jeddah highway, was opened on Friday. The road, which runs for 28 kilometres, will act as an additional route connecting the Haramain Road, and enable visitors to get to the Holy City much quicker than previously, halving the time it takes to get between the cities.
Muhammad Tawfiq Madani, Director of Mecca Transport and Traffic Department, explained the new road is connected to the Al-Hijra Road that leads to Madinah and has exits to the Huda Al-Sham region.
"It is easier for those coming from northern Jeddah and King Abdul Aziz International Airport to take the new road. That would significantly mitigate pressure on the Haramain and Makkah-Jeddah highways that are witnessing dense traffic these days," he told local reporters.
The newly-opened section of road is just a part of the project to connect Mecca and Madinah, but there is still a lot of work to be carried out.
