New school term could increase road dangers

Date: 23/8/2010
Road users should drive carefully near schools as the new term begins, a police officer has warned.Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing at Tayside Police in Scotland, told the Press and Journal officers will pay particular attention to drivers on the school run.
"The start of the new school year brings with it the potential for increased danger around the area of schools," she said.
It is therefore essential that drivers obey the reduced speed limit of 20 mph, Inspector Bowman continued, because there will be increases in traffic flow and children may step into the road unexpectedly.
Tayside Police is running a road safety campaign today (August 23rd), which aims to reduce speeding and the number of motorists who do not wear seatbelts.
Research recently released by Road Safety Analysis found children from low income families are more likely to be injured in a road accident than those who live in affluent areas.
