New Wigan road signs 'aim to reduce driver frustration'

Date: 23/12/2010

Drivers hitting the roads in Wigan could well find their experience has become less frustrating, thanks to new signs unveiled by the local authority.

According to Wigan Today, money from the Highways Capital Programme has helped to fund the signs, which display real time information and road safety messages, in a similar way to alert boards that have been installed on the motorways.

Mark Tilley, Head of Highways, said there will now be six points at which a driver can make an informed decision over the best route to take.

He added that it was an important service, which would soon be linked to a database, allowing people to check details before they leave their home.

"As well as helping to manage the road network by providing advance warning of emergencies and incidents, these signs can display road safety messages, warn of upcoming events and suggest alternative routes," Mr Tilley explained.

Elsewhere, the BBC recently reported that work has begun on a new road safety scheme in Leicestershire, which will include the introduction of improved hazard signs.
