New bus lanes to be constructed in Leeds

Date: 9/3/2010
A total of £20 million has been earmarked for a new scheme to create additional bus lanes in Leeds.Under the new plans, bus lanes will be constructed on the A65 approach to Leeds.
It is hoped the lanes will ease congestions and reduce journey times for bus passengers.
To make space for the bus lanes, the stretch of road between the inner and outer ring road will be widened. This will ensure that other road users do not suffer delays as a result of the new lanes.
Transport minister Sadiq Khan stated his belief that the scheme will make buses a real alternative to the car, which will help ease congestion in the north-western part of the city.
He added: "An efficient and reliable transport system is the lifeblood of every local community. This is why we're investing significant amounts of money in Leeds' transport infrastructure."
Construction is due to commence soon and will be complete by 2012.
The scheme is to be fully funded by the Department for Transport.
Road users could also benefit from a new scheme from the government department, which will see the penalty faced by firms that allow road works to overrun increase ten fold to £25,000 a day.
