New bus service to be constructed between Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis

Date: 11/3/2010
A new bus service is to create faster and more reliable connections between Luton, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Luton Airport Parkway station and Luton airport.Costing £89 million, the project will create a new 'guided busway', which will consist of specially adapted buses that run on their own track as well as the public roads.
It is hoped the new system will offer an efficient alternative to traveling by car.
Work is due to start on the construction of the busway in December this year and is likely to be completed by April 2012.
Transport minister Sadiq Khan commented on the plans: "When completed, this scheme will benefit the entire community by easing congestion and encouraging greater integration between services."
The first £80 million is to be provided by the Department for Transport and the rest of the funding is to be provided by local authorities and private investors.
The busway is to measure 7.2 miles upon completion.
In other news from the Department for Transport, Lord Adonis is to outline plans for a high-speed railway today (March 11th).
