New campaign to improve road safety

Date: 6/5/2010
Police in Avon and Somerset are launching a new initiative in a bid to reduce vehicle collisions and improve road safety.Officer will join forces with the Highways Agency to offer advice to motorists, while also increasing the number of patrols on the area's road network.
Sergeant Mike Olding remarked: "The majority of collisions are the result of driver error, so it is essential that we get out there and remind people to drive responsibly."
He added the project is part of an ongoing campaign to reduce the number of injuries on the region's roads, as well as save lives.
Heavy goods vehicles will also be under the spotlight, with checks being carried out to determine their roadworthiness.
A campaign using pictures of road accidents to persuade motorists to stick to speed limits has been recently been launched by firefighters in St Albans, the Herts Advertiser reported.
