New railway station moves, passengers not affected

New railway station moves, passengers not affected

Date: 26/10/2009

Docklands Light Railway's new South Quay station was reportedly opened for traffic over the weekend and promised there would be no disruptions to passengers in the new terminal, thanks to extensive civil engineering.

The £30 million station was built to replace the existing one because its platform was too curved to be lengthened, said the Transport for London report.

DLR is expanding its trains next year to accommodate traffic, and the old station was just not compatible with the new three-carriage-long trains.

The new station was engineered some 125 metres from the current one, where the train line is straight.

DLR Chairman, Ian Brown, said "The new South Quay station is a prime example of our ability to carry out complicated engineering work with as little disruption as possible."

Mr Brown explained the old station was in use until the end of Friday and the new station opened in the morning Saturday, for testing over the weekend.

He said the terminal change was a success and opens the door for 50 per cent more passengers on each train.ADNFCR-2726-ID-19426507-ADNFCR
